AboutCollege education is an extremely central and divisive issue in America. A college degree is increasingly critical in a job search at the expense of the pockets of millions of Americans. Despite this impertinence, many Americans have begun to question its value as the price tag slowly climbs. In fact, tuition increases have surged well past the rate of tuition, more than doubling within just thirty years. As students recognize the importance of a degree, two-thirds of American college students are sacrificing their financial future by taking out large loans, landing a substantial burden on their shoulders for more than a decade past their college days in many cases. However, with the rising importance of a college degree on the rise, Americans have answered the bell by ensuring that they obtain a degree to set them apart in competitive job markets. This is self-defeatist in a sense, because now a college degree is becoming a right for students just to keep at the same level of their competition. So, as the job market becomes more saturated, a college degree is no longer is stands one out from the rest. This has snowballed into a nationwide issue since most people desire employment, and until recently a degree forged a clear path towards that achieving goal. So now, 40% of Americans holding college degrees put their financial well-being in jeopardy just to keep up with everyone else. The college tuition issue is so pressing due to its wide reaching nature. Today, about two-thirds of high school graduates enroll in a higher education institution, and each one of them is directly impacted by tuition increases. They enter college bright-eyed and ready to take on the world, but are crippled by the daunting process of paying for their education for years to come after their college days are done. While college is surely a key part for the future of American to grow up, become independent, gain valuable knowledge, and lead the future of the country. However, the cost of these opportunities are escalating far beyond the means of many students, and lowering their return on investment. So as seniors nationwide begin their applications to take the next step in their life, the question of “Where do I want to go to school?” has unfortunately been replaced with “Is this all worth it?” This is a problem that needs addressing, and will be elaborated upon further when observing the need for efficiency, how the government can help, and the effect of consumerism on the price of tuition. |
